AIIC VEGA USA - FIU Outreach event

AIIC’s VEGA USA held an outreach session at Miami’s Florida International University on 6 October.

Forty-five people attended this 4-hour interactive outreach session lead by Katty Kauffman that covered a range of subjects but focused primarily on best practices prior to, during and following an event.

Many the participants had no formal training in conference interpreting, so the session also included a section on making the transition from community (local court/medical) to the conference circuit, including programs, techniques and information critical to transitioning to the conference level.

Participants were keenly interested in practical tips and participated actively in the discussion about professional ethics and several of the case studies we analyzed.

A diverse audience of around 30 students, recent conference interpreting graduates and more seasoned conference interpreters, with A languages ranging from Spanish to Turkish and Polish to German, came along to hear Uros introduce AIIC and explain the benefits of being part of our association. UK & Ireland VEGA representative Louise Jarvis then took over to explain the nitty gritty of how to join AIIC, emphasising that AIIC membership was not an end, but rather a beginning.

The event concluded with all-important networking over tea and cake, when a dozen existing regional AIIC members from a range of booths were on hand to talk to our guests and answer their questions.
